Abstract The township of Brunswick was incorporated on May 3, 1717. Until 1747 the town was served by temporary missionary ministers. In 1747 the First Parish Church was actually split into two buildings, one following Congregational polity and the other following Presbyterian polity. The Orthodox Congregational Church in Cambridge, Illinois was formed on February 9, 1851, in the house of Nelson Gaines, with eleven founding members. Sometime before 1880, the church changed its name to the First Congregational Church. The collection contains two volumes of records which include meeting minutes, church manuals, membership lists, baptismal records, and church ledgers.

In 1869, construction began on a new gothic revival church building, designed by Gurdon P. Randall.
